Low-E Glass Windows in Alexandria

The quality of our windows has a big impact on the energy efficiency of our home. Older, inefficient windows can be responsible for up to 30% of the energy used on heating and cooling a home. Low-quality windows can let the heat out in the winter and the cool air out in the summer, which overworks HVAC units and drives up the bills.

Atlas Home Service is proud to offer Low-E glass windows to our customers to help them modernize their homes and save on their energy bills.

What is Low-E Glass?

Low-E glass, also known as low-emissivity glass, was built to prevent excessive ultraviolet and infrared rays from entering people’s homes through their windows without decreasing the amount of light they get during the day. This glass is outfitted with a thin coating designed to reflect heat from entering the home and keep the temperature inside consistent.

Types of Low-E Coatings

Not all Low-E coatings are built the same way. Currently, Low-E coatings are applied to windows in two different processes:

  • Passive (hard-coat): Passive Low-E coatings are fused to glass windows during the production process while the glass is still hot, and the bond is highly durable.
  • Solar Control (soft-coat): This coating is applied to windows in a vacuum chamber while the glass is at room temperature, and therefore needs to be sealed in with laminate or more glass. However, this type of coating provides the least emissivity and best control over solar heat.

The Benefits of Low-E Glass

Choosing windows with Low-E glass coatings can be beneficial to homeowners in many ways, some of which may be unexpected. The benefits of low-emissivity coatings include:

  • Reduced heat loss: Low-E coatings can help homeowners reduce heat loss from their homes by up to 50%.
  • More money: People who opt to have windows with Low-E coatings installed will see a drop in the costs of heating and cooling their homes.
  • Durability: Low-E coatings are built to last and cannot be damaged or lost over time due to weather or average wear.
  • Protection: Low-emissivity coatings prevent ultraviolet rays from entering the homes, which prevents carpets, furniture, and personal belongings from yellowing and losing vibrancy over time.
  • Property value: The property value of someone’s home can increase significantly if they replace old, drafty windows with new, Low-E coated windows.

Low-emissivity coatings will not affect the amount of sunlight that comes into your home. They may appear to have a slight tint to them, but these windows are just as clear as average windows. Given their effectiveness in every season, Low-E windows can act as a great supplement to pre-existing insulation in any home.

Which Coating Is Right for Me?

Different versions of Low-E coatings exist for different climates and picking the correct one can help make sure your home stays a comfortable temperature. The coatings created for different heat gains include:

  • Low Solar Heat Gain: This version of a Low-E coating prevents heat transmission altogether, allowing homeowners to have more control over the temperature of their home in the winter and preventing heat from entering during the summer.
  • Medium Solar Heat Gain: This coating reduces the amount of heat that can escape the home and allows a moderate amount of solar heat to enter.
  • High Solar Heat Gain. Best in cold climates, this coating reduces the amount of heat that can escape the home and allows solar heat to enter freely.
